Robert S. Hammond

Narrator

Robert S. Hammond was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1926. His mother is African- and Native American and she is from a tribal-owned island of the coast of South Carolina; his father is of African- and European-American descent, also from the South. Mr. Hammond was a Naval corpsman during WWII and he worked at the New York Naval Hospital in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Following his service in the Navy, Mr. Hammond completed high school at Boys High in Brooklyn, earned a Master's in Public Health and went on to a long career in the field. This interview was conducted in 2010 for the Brooklyn Navy Yard oral history collection
