This photograph (click to enlarge) by artist, university professor, and Japanese tattoo aficionado and client, Kip Fulbeck, is part of the exhibition he created and designed at the Japanese American National Museum. Fulbeck brought in the famed tattooer and author Takahiro Kitamura to curate the show entitled Perseverance: Japanese Tattoo Tradition in a Modern World (March 8 - September 14, 2014).

Kip Fulbeck is also author of several books which explore themes of mixed heritage, including Mixed: Portraits of Multiracial Kids  and Part Asian, 100% Hapa.

For this online exhibition, Kip has chosen photographs from Perseverance which illustrate cross-cultural fusion in the art of Japanese tattooing.

The above photograph shows the work of tattoo artist Horikiku, who is based in Yokohama, Japan. This work is in a traditional style, although it is unusual to do chest panels on a woman.
