Jasmine Mitchell

Biography

Jasmine Mitchell was born to an African American mother and a white father in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her parents relocated to Brooklyn, New York when she was two years old. She attended Phillips Academy, a boarding school in Andover, Massachusetts. Mitchell earned a B.A. in American studies from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts and a Ph.D in American studies from the University of Minnesota: Twin Cities. She returned to New York to work as an assistant professor at the State University of New York College at Old Westbury.

Interview Highlight

"I was already dating my husband, and my friend kept on trying to set me up with this guy. He's actually a very nice guy. He'd be great for someone else. But what she kept on talking about, “He's also biracial, Jasmine. He's also black and he's also white. You guys should date.” I was like, “I already am seeing someone.” She's like, “But I think you guys are really good.” It was like that was the key."
