A wonderful audience gathered at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens when we presented The Loving Story followed by a discussion with filmmaker Nancy Buirski.

This documentary film tells the story of Richard and Mildred Loving and their family’s role in dismantling racist laws barring interracial marriage. It was their Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia (1967) that declared it unconstitutional for states to ban interracial marriage.

Nancy Buirski explained how she was inspired to make the documentary after reading Mildred Loving's obituary in 2008 while the contemporary debate about marriage equality for same-sex marriage vs. homophobic laws barring same-sex marriage was ongoing. And she described the wonderful luck of uncovering archival film footage by Hope Ryden (in a closet!) and beautiful documentary photographs by Grey Villet which are both used to great effect in the film.
