Jack Goins, Melungeon DNA Project

"A Code to Live By in Appalachia" is a radio documentary by Mary Helen Miller for Transom.org

The Melungeon people, a mixed-race community, settled in southern Appalachia, in the mountains along the Tennessee-Virginia border, in the late 1700s.  Curious about his own Melungeon ancestry, Jack Goins started the Melungeon DNA Project to collect samples from other descendants.

Producer/reporter Mary Helen Millers says, "I hope my story gives some insight as to what it was like to be a Melungeon in the South when racism was at its height, and what it means to claim that heritage now."
