"Harmful to the child"?

In an article on Slate, "Won't Somebody Think of the Children," Brian Palmer describes similarities between the 1967 Supreme Court case over the legality of interracial marriage, Loving v. Virginia,  and today's Supreme Court debate over same-sex marriage.  In both cases, opponents to marriage equality question the parenting skills of these families.

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?, Stanley Kramer's 1967 film about two families struggling to accept an interracial marriage, has a great example of this concern being raised:

"Have you given any thought to the problems your children are going to have?" asks potential father-in-law Mr. Drayton (Spencer Tracy).

To which potential son-in-law Dr. Prentice (Sidney Poitier) responds, "[Joanna] feels that every single one of our children will be president of the United States!"
