Commentary on President Obama's Mixed Heritage

Responding to the news of President Obaman's ancestral connection via his maternal family to John Punch, the first enslaved African in the US, political commentator John McWhorter wrote this essay: "Despite Mixed Heritage, President Obama is Hardly Post-Racial" (New York Magazine Aug 2, 2012):

"In America, the one-drop rule lives on, enforced partly by white perceptions, of course, but also by black people’s quest for cultural fellowship."
